So here's the Original Bonzo Dog (Doo Dah) Band performance.
From listening to the song, i'd say that one of the Bonzos - probably Viv - saw a tabloid article headlined "Death Cab for Cutie", and, rather as Lennon with "Mr Kite", set the essential text to music.
It's a wonderful Elvis-like performance, and a low-fi version is available here.
